ABOUT THE TUBERS
Want to know more about the letters in our descriptions online? Check out this website for more information on how dahlias are classified. If it's a new variety or hasn't been vetted by the American Dahlia Society to become an official variety yet, it may not be listed.
Our team sorts and divides the tubers through the winter, which are stored in sawdust and kept at a consistent 38ºF once they've been divided. Our tubers are priced and sold as single tubers, though we often send out 2 or more tubers in a small clump so they are less susceptible to damage while in transit to you. If a neck breaks during shipping, you'll still have a viable tuber upon arrival if there's extra tubers still attached. You can also divide the tuber down further to grow more plants once they've sprouted.
In the spring, each tuber is packed by hand and given one more quality check before it goes in the mail. Tubers will be shipped dormant, so it is important to note that the eye(s) may not be visible when you receive them.
On occasion, we'll discover a variety didn't produce good tubers or the tubers didn't store well over the winter. In the event we don't have a variety you ordered, we will substitute with a dahlia tuber of equal or greater value, with similar characteristics when possible.
Are your tubers grown on your farm?
All tubers grown on our farm are handled with care by our team through the whole process: planting, growing, digging, dividing, and sorting. Follow along with us on Instagram as we explain each step.
Are your tubers sold in clumps or as individual tubers?
Tubers are priced and sold as single tubers, but may come in a small clump with multiple tubers attached depending on tuber formatino. If you receive tubers in a small clump from us, it does NOT mean they are imported.
As a rule, we don't divide tuber clumps down to the single tuber.
1) Shipping small clumps provides a safety factor in case any breakage occurs in transit to you. Each order is packed with care, but if a neck breaks during shipping, you'll still receive a viable tuber that will grow a healthy plant.
2) With hundred of thousands of tubers to clean and divide, simplifying the process allows our crew to work more efficiently. The tubers are divided when they are still dormant and their eyes may be hard to identify.
Are your dahlia tubers organic?
Are your tubers tested for disease?
We regularly test our tuber and plant material throughout the growing season in partnership with the Plant Pathology Program at The Oho State University, and also Oregon State University. If you believe there is an issue with your tuber or plant that was purchased from us, please visit our page on Dahlia Tuber Disease linked here.
